Article publisher part 1: Newpro vs Greymatter... wait! MovableType!
First there were Newspro and NewsPHP, and after weeks of using both, I have settled with Newspro for my purpose of updating my private notes through a browser. Then I came across Greymatter and was very impressed by its customisability and its HTML output options, and was about to put up with its strange quirks when I came across MovableType... 24 hours later. I now have plan for it to replace the US$300 "Article Manager" package I recommended a client.MovableType 9/10
- Regarded as a "blog" program but its features far exceed certain commercal CMS
- What I like
An vast improvement from the tight take-it-or-leave-it Greymatter environment. Categories with their own output options. Good user group. Customisability, customisability. Clean interface. Syndicated content support (not tested)
- What I don't like (I can put up with most these easily!)
No internal search engine. No custom fields. No email submission. Doesn't handle page spanning well for long lists. Output static pages.
Greymatter 7/10
- It is nice, but not so nice. Strange quirks
- What I like
An vast improvement from Newspro for my need. HTML static page generation, the templates! Built in comment feature, and search engine, Email submission via a hack! - allows you to set up an email account that automatically parse incoming mail and display as an article!
- What I don't like
Basically single category (without hack). CANNOT easily delete articles from the database, can only mark them as hidden! Doesn't handle modified date. Very set-minded group of people at the user forum: "...why would you need feature like that?" attitude! Templates can only be modified via web browser
NewsPro 6/10
- The script initiates my quest for an "article publisher" that manages all my private and public files online! Initial review here
- What I like
Simple layouts to be included with PHP. Accessible modifiable perl code. The user base and the available hacks.
- What I don't like
Basically single category (without hack). Generates inidvidual files for each article. Requires PHP (or ssi) to be useful. Site is constantly offline, the project may be abandoned. Searching and modifying articles can be hard if you have many articles, since all articles are presented in a long page!
NewsPHP 5/10
- What I like
Simple layouts. PHP. Ability to put a main date, instead of tagging the same date to news items
- What I don't like
Purely single category, single use. Editing is tedious!
